Dear Björn!
Seit ich denken kann und Baseball spiele, bist du Bestandteil der Athletics. Bereits als ich Nachwuchsspieler war, warst du ein Vorbild für alle Nachkommenden. Nicht nur wegen deiner spielerischen Qualitäten haben wir zu dir aufgeschaut. Vor allem deine Ruhe und Gelassenheit haben das eine oder andere Mal wahre Wunder bewirkt. Ich habe dich als Mitspieler, Coach und Freund erlebt und kann sagen, dass du in jeder dieser Rollen deine Authentizität bewahrt hast. Deinen Humor und die Ausgewogenheit, die du mir und dem Team beschert hast, vermisse ich jetzt schon.
Ich hoffe du bleibst uns noch lange als Freund und BP Werfer erhalten!

Having had the opportunity to play alongside David Burns during the 2016 and 2017 season was a truly rewarding experience.
Please allow me to elaborate. Playing with Burnsy is like having your dad at first base. If your dad is a 16 year old skater punk that is embodied by a tall Canadian man in his mid 40s. Truly, one of a kind.
With the successful launch of BBJO, Burns and his team are making dreams come true by providing the amazing opportunity to play baseball overseas. My personal experience was as follows: In the winter of 2015, I contacted Burns about finding a new team and he forced me to sign up for his services of his website and then signed me to his own club. Cunning. Brilliant.
Not only did I have the chance to play and win with Burns, I had the unique experience of being one of his roommates. So many memories. One that really sticks out was when he woke up early one morning (after one too many cups of coffee) only to inform me that he in a high school basketball game he blocked Future NBA Hall of Famer, Steve Nash. Not once, but twice. In the same damn game. This actually occurred on multiple occasions. Nevertheless, each time I was impressed to hear it.
Congratulations on a very successful and rewarding playing career Burnsy. I’m convinced I will still see you out on the field.
And for the record, I didn’t steal your Canadian flag.

Ich habe zu Dave immer aufgeschaut. Wegen seiner Größe 🙂 Spaß bei Seite – er hat das mitgebracht was einen Teamspieler ausmacht. Herz, Leidenschaft und Kampfgeist! Es war mir eine Ehre mit ihm im selben Team zu spielen! Ohne Dave wären unsere Erfolge und die Entwicklung in unserem Club nie möglich gewesen. Love him and can’t wait to sit with him in the bleachers and drink some brewskis and watch our Team win.

When I met this Canadian at the age of two I immediately had a baseball bat in my hand. He said „Good job buddy“ all the time. This sentence reminds me of Dave to this day.
Dave changed my life that one day in 2014 when he invited me to a practice. He was the one who always believed in me. I got to spend a lot of my youth time with him, got to learn so much from him, had so much fun with him and met great people through him. For me an absolutely remarkable person, coach and friend.

Dave, when you came over in 1999 as one of the “Crazy Canucks“ we brought over as our very first import players ever, I did not expect that I will share the incredible A’s story with you for the next 20+ years. So many memories and stories on and off the field come up to my mind if I remember the good times we had together. Along with a few other guys you are definitely a big part of the heart and the soul of our great organization and I am happy that I was on that incredible journey with you together for so many years. However, I expect that this journey does not come to an end with the conclusion of your playing career. Let’s continue to do big things with the A’s and I really look forward to strike you out at one of the upcoming Slowpitch games we will have together.

Dear Dave,
In my first weeks as a member of the Athletics I heard stories about a Canadian player which somehow already sounded like an urban myth, since we missed each other by a couple of months when I joined the club in 1999. (Years later i would find out, those stories were true, so true!)
A couple of years later, after your return to Austria we finally met. Ever since you were a companion on my personal journey in the best organization I could have ever dreamed of being part one day. Most people wouldn’t know of our countless hours on the phone or in person – discussing, reflecting and squeezing out new ideas on how to make us a better ballclub. You challenged me, gave advice or just supported me with your experience. I appreciate your enthusiasm of making this organization better and help develop the Athletics to what we are today. Your perspective and point of view was mostly different from what I had considered to be a great idea, but this in fact helped myself and the whole club to make better decisions. You can be proud of what you accomplished, not only as a player, but as part of our organization and how your influence helped us to get to another level. Let us, together, write a couple more chapters in this great book!

Dave, like for many others, has made a positive impact on my life. The opportunities he has created for ball players around the globe is nothing short of life changing, and my experience has been no exception. I’ve been fortunate enough to not just work with Dave through BBJO but also as a teammate. His positive and helping presence on the diamond has been influential to those around him and was also a joy for the few years I was able to play with him. Not to mention how awesome it was having a guy like Dave to throw to at 1st base from across the infield knowing you could throw it a mile in any direction and he was still going to reach it! Burnsy, thank you for the baseball and life opportunities you have given me, I am forever grateful. You’re the man, and wish you the best post-retirement.

First off, congratulations for your career, Dave. I will never forget the grand slam he hit during our final series in 2017. His presence at the plate was always disciplined and always a tough out to make.
And I wish I were that tall that I could have saved more runs as first baseman like him 🙂 congratulations again and I hope your next career is going to be as bright as your playing career. And also I hope your son will follow your step.

Diese Erfahrung musstest du buchstäblich in Valencia machen, als du schon etwas „müde“ von deinem Firewheel abgestiegen bist. Diese Lebensweisheit hast du aber sicherlich schon früh verinnerlicht und nicht vergessen. Das hast du uns oft und jahrelang bewiesen und ich hoffe, dass dir das Golfen in einem Jahr zu langweilig wird und du wieder im Jersey der A’s 2 mit deinem Sidearm-Schleuderball die Hitter alt aussehen lässt und Burnsy Bombs über den Zaun jagst.
Am meisten bewundere ich jedoch, dass du immer die Balance findest zwischen Tony Hawk und Gandalf und dir nie zu schade bist über dich selbst zu lachen, aber auch immer einen weisen Ratschlag auf Lager hast. Ich blicke ständig auf viele gemeinsame Erlebnisse zurück – angefangen bei unserer ersten Begegnung als du und Burke uns Jugendspielern den Kopf zurechtgerückt hast, über die gemeinsamen Jahre als Teammates, bis hin zur Geschichte, als dich eine Haselnuss in Darth Vader verwandelte und hoffe auf unzählige weitere.
Dave, ich möchte dir zu einer großartigen Karriere gratulieren!

Back in 2013, in my first year with the A’s, Dave let me live his home, and welcomed me with open arms. Ever since then, he’s been like a brother to me. It was a great pleasure and experience for me to get to live, play and coach alongside him. It will be something that I’ll never forget and always be grateful for. What Dave has accomplished on the field, both personally and what he has meant for the A’s club is truly something that deserves the highest praise and acknowledgement.
I will forever have the utmost respect for what you’ve done throughout your career, and I’m proud that I was able to be a part of it.
You’re like a brother to me, and I wish you all the best in your retirement years!

Ich hab Dave Burns in seiner aktiven Zeit und darüber hinaus sehr schätzen gelernt – als Sportler, als Mensch – immer für seinen Baseball im Einsatz – und für jeden Spaß zu haben… Lieber Dave, ich wünsche dir im sportlichen Ruhestand alles Gute!

Neben Chili, Andre und dem Wörns,
gibs bei den Ösis noch den Burns.
Riesig wie die Bäum am Feld,
gibts eines was ihm sehr gefällt –
wenn Dave an Ball ganz satt erwischt,
er ihn fröhlich in die Bäume drischt.
Schlagen kann er, des is klar,
und sagen tuat er’s jedes Jahr,
kann ma’s kaum glauben wenn so is,
dass Dave jetz doch in Rente is.
Doch leider geht jede Legende,
irgendwann mal Richtung Ende.
Hat viel bewegt in Österreich,
und grad die Pitcher is dann gleich,
wird Dave mit seiner Website reich.
Viel hat er sich da ausgedacht,
und Spieler übern Teich herbracht.
Und macht er doch als Spieler schluss,
weit reicht da Arm, und sein Einfluss.

Happy Retirement! You have been a great contribution to baseball in Attnang, but also to Austria and all over Europe. I couldn’t be happier having somebody like you supporting the efforts of making baseball a global sport and giving clubs and players from overseas alike the opportunity to experience new cultures.
Congratulations on your career, even tough it means that Athletics‘ infielder will have a horrible fielding average for the next years, as they will miss not only one of the tallest, but also one of the best picking first basemen in Europe!

Als ich 2014 in die Liga kam war Dave für mich schon ein verdienter Veteran. Mehr als Coach, aber ab und zu schnappte er sich noch einen Schläger. 2015 spielten wir dann das erste Mal gegeneinander, hier ein kleiner Einblick. „Verdammt wie kann es sein, dass dieser alte Mann in Attnang Nummer 4 in der Lineup schlägt? Ist dieses Team so verzweifelt?“, waren meine Gedanken als ich das erste Mal ein Spiel als Catcher gegen Dave als Hitter gecallt habe. Aus mangelnden Respekt, oder naiver Unwissenheit, gab ich Dave einen First Pitch Fastball. Er lies mich diese Entscheidung direkt büßen und schlug einen krachenden Double gegen den Zaun, joggte (eventuell mit maximaler Geschwindigkeit) locker zu Second Base.
„Nagut, er ist ein großer Kerl, hat vermutlich geraten, dass ein Fastball kommt,…“
Nächstes At Bat startete ich mit einem Curveball gegen Dave. Er schwing weit daneben. „OK hehe, so ein Hitter ist er also.“ 10 Pitches im selben Atbat später, nach einem harten Kampf steht Dave abermals auf der 2nd Base. Diesmal sichtlich mehr außer Puste, aber mit seinem 2. Double in 2 Atbats.
Am Ende des Tages brillierte Burns, 7 von 10 Atbats kam er auf Base.
Für mich war es schon cool, auch wenn er der Gegner war, zu sehen dass dieser „alte“ Mann einen so herausragenden Tag hatte. In absoluter Unwissenheit, dass Dave, der Alte, dies noch 6 weitere Season so machen wird. Einfach nur atemberaubend.
Dave! Ich danke dir für diesen Tag. Ich danke dir für die Zeit als mein Gegner, für die Zeit als mein Coaching Mentor und vor Allem auch für die Zeit als Teammate.
